Making a Beautiful Pond with Water Lilies
Water lilies can be considered as one of the most beautiful pond flowers. That is why Monet got interested and then made so many paintings of water lilies years ago. For so long, the flowers themselves have been used in ponds as a part of decoration.
No need to question how flowers, fountains, waterfalls, and other garden accessories become a great way to make an ordinary garden look extraordinary. In this case, water lilies are a creative way to enhance the appearance of the whole view of the pond. They are extremely popular pond plants, so you can get them easily in nurseries, florists, and even online catalogs.
If you do not have any idea about water lilies, I am going to guide you. When you look at a fish pond or lake in a park or anywhere and you see flowers with large white or pink petals surrounded by large and round green leaves, those are water lilies. The leaves are circular, sized up to 25 cm across, and colored purple on the lower surface, while most of the leaves floating. Can you see how beautiful this view is?
There are certain periods for water lilies to grow. In spring time, usually in April, the new shoots will appear from the rhizomes and grow until they reach the water surface. Then, you can see and enjoy the flowers from June to September. The most beautiful part in enjoying them is by seeing each blossom opens in the morning before closing back in the early afternoon. What helps the pollination the most are bees and beetles.
To grow them, you should know that they require quiet waters such as ponds, lakes, and slow streams. They give many benefits for living creatures in the ponds, including being a shelter for the fish and frogs. It reduces too much sun light entering your pond that may cause danger to your fish. Besides beautifying your pond, they can also change the waste produced by the fish into beneficial nutrients, absorb certain materials and filter the water. Their existence can also keep your pond away from algae.
