I’m making an aquarium hood cover and i want to add some LED’s.?

I’m making an aquarium hood and i want to put some LED’s on top. I would add maybe 4 or 5. what kind of resistor would i have to use so that i could use the power from my socket to power the LED’s without them burning out.

You need a transformer (radioshack) like one for charging a cell phone or similar device. Find one that says it outputs 5VDC at .5 amps (or 500 m amps). The (I) Amps can be higher but not to much or you will need to use resistors to limit the current to the LED(s). Voltages above six Vdc will cause the LED(s) to burn bright & hot and not last ever long.

Basically pull the two wires coming out of the transformer apart and soldier the LED(s) across from one to the other.
On new LED(s) one post is longer then the other – the package will tell you if this longer leg is positive or negative (I just can’t remember) or just touch the LED to the wires one way then the other to determine polarity.

In brief most LED(s) are 5vdc and consume 200 milliamps of current at start up then their energy usage drops by more then half during normal operation.

Don’t forget to add a switch

A simple trip to radio shack would be the best. If your lucky real lucky the person behind the counter will have some basic knowledge
