Freshwater Versus Saltwater Aquariums

People who love keeping fish go to great lengths when deciding the type of fish aquariums to buy. The most common considerations they make when shopping for an aquarium include the shape of the tank, its size and the material used in making the aquarium. Other considerations they are likely to make concern the price and the design of the tank. In most cases, the freshwater tanks are preferred to saltwater tanks because they are not as expensive as the saltwater tanks.

Maintenance

Besides freshwater aquariums being less expensive than saltwater tanks, they are also very easy to maintain and setup. The reason why saltwater tanks are more expensive than freshwater aquariums is because of the cost of the additional equipment required. For instance, saltwater fish require corals in the tanks, which add to the cost of the aquariums. In addition, saltwater aquariums require a lot of time when changing the water. Since the level of salt in the water has to be regularly monitored, this has the effect of adding responsibility to the person. In the case of freshwater tanks, there is no need to constantly monitor the levels of salt in the water.

Variety of Fish

There are different varieties of saltwater fish compared to freshwater fish and this adds flavor to the aquarium. The marine is full of various kinds of fish such as Blue Tang, Hawk Fish, Clownfish, Fantail Filefish among other varieties. These saltwater fish add more color and life to the aquarium and help to improve the appearance of the room. The fish that are available in saltwater are more beautiful and exotic, compared to those found in freshwater aquariums. However, with all of these advantages linked to saltwater aquariums, they can only support saltwater fish, which are more expensive than freshwater fish.

Filtration

Freshwater tanks needs some type of filter either a combination of water or air pumps together with filtration substances such as carbon, sponges or gravel. For the saltwater tanks special filters referred to as foam fractionators are required. These filters are responsible for removing waste products that cannot be removed using ordinary filters. The filters are needed to maintain proper balance in the aquarium since saltwater fish are more sensitive to waste than freshwater fish. Saltwater tanks also require another costly type of filtration known as live rock.
